If you believe you know what each student’s allocated reading level should be, you can directly assign an individual reading level for them to begin with.
Please note: The teacher assigned to their classroom(s), or the teacher with the school administrator role, can both directly assign students to individual reading levels.
- Navigate to the main menu and click on the Reading Levels section.
- Click on the View Reading Level List link.
- Choose an appropriate classroom from the Classroom field.
- Choose the All option from the Current Reading Level field.
- Click the Submit button.
Changing these options works differently depending on your type of subscription. If you have a CARS & STARS subscription, please click on the second panel. If you have a CARS subscription only, please click the last panel.
Assign Placement Test
Please note: Students in the same year level may have differing levels of comprehension and therefore be on different CARS & STARS levels within the same class. Level AA correlates with Prep/Foundation, Level A correlates to Year 1 and Level H with Year 8 or higher.
Assign Placement Level to a single student
- To assign a placement level to an individual student, move your cursor onto the student’s row and, under the Action column, click on the Manage Reading Level button.
- In What Would You Like to Do? field, choose Assign Placement Level.
- Choose a placement level from the Recommended Placement Level field. The Recommended Placement Level field is pre-filled with the beginning Placement level for this student based on their year of birth and the data from their previous reading level(s). However, if you are already confident of your student’s placement level, you can overwrite the pre-filled placement level by selecting other placement levels.
- Click on the Submit button.
Assign Placement Level to a small group
- To assign a placement level to a group of students, select the checkbox next to each student’s details and click on the Mark button found on the bottom of the page, ensuring that you have the correct number of students selected.
- In What Would You Like to Do? field, choose to Allow the selected students to take or retake Placement Level.
- Choose a placement level from the Recommended Placement Level field. The Recommended Placement Level field is pre-filled with the Intelligent Placement option. The Intelligent Placement option will intelligently allocate the beginning Placement level for your selected students based on their years of birth and the data from their previous reading level(s). However, if you are already confident of your student’s placement level, you can overwrite the pre-filled Intelligent Placement option by selecting other placement levels.
- Click on the Submit button.
Assign Placement Level to the whole class
- To assign a placement level to the whole class, click on the View All button and then the Select All button.
- Click on the Mark button, ensuring that you have the correct number of students selected.
- In What Would You Like to Do? field, choose to Allow the selected students to take or retake Placement Level.
- Choose a placement level from the Recommended Placement Level field. The Recommended Placement Level field is pre-filled with the Intelligent Placement option. Currently the Pre-Reading Level (P) is only available for student with a Virtual Account. A Trial or Subscription Account does not include pre-reading level. Learn more.
